Gill, Rohit and Kohli in top five of ICC’s ODI batting rankings

The squad also made strides on the bowling rankings with Kuldeep Yadav at number three and Jadeja at number ten
India’s recent unbeaten streak in the Champions Trophy has seen some players advance in the ICC’s ODI rankings – both batting and bowling. They occupy four of the top eight ranked batsmen in the world with Shubman Gill continuing at No. 1. Rohit Sharma, Player of the Final for his match-winning 76, has risen two places to No. 3 and Virat Kohli, with 218 runs under his belt in the tournament, finds himself at No. 5. Shreyas Iyer held his No. 8 position.

The third Champions Trophy title of the side was orchestrated by their spinners and two of them have reached the top ten on the ODI bowlers’ table. Kuldeep Yadav, who started his spell in the final with a wicket, is at third position and tenth is Ravindra Jadeja, who maintained a miserly economy rate of 4.35 in the tournament.

India’s following ODI task is abroad in Bangladesh in August, and ODIs in Australia in October-November. South Africa and New Zealand tour India in the months of December and January subsequently, and the one question has been whether Rohit and Kohli keep playing the format with the 2027 ODI World Cup still sufficiently distant. Ricky Ponting, however, feels that Rohit definitely has some unfinished business in the ODI cricket.

“I reckon possibly the fact that they did lose the last one [2023 World Cup in India] and he was captain, that could be the thing on the back of his mind,” Ponting said in an interview with icc.tv. “Give him one more go at trying to win the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the ODI World Cup. I mean when you look at him perform like he performed in the Champions Trophy final, you would not say his time is over yet.”

Santner, Bracewell, Ravindra take a rocket boost

New Zealand’s team players also gained a lot after their team’s campaign to the Champions Trophy final. Captain Mitchell Santner also climbed to number two in the list of ODI bowlers, advancing six spots on the strength of some impressive showings. Santner had nine wickets in the competition at a strike rate of 4.80.

Santner is also fourth in the ODI allrounders’ list with Michael Bracewell, who scored a fifty in the last and was New Zealand’s second-leading wicket-taker in the Champions Trophy, at seventh position.

The other New Zealand player to make an impact, Rachin Ravindra who was the top-scorer of the tournament, moved 14 places to 14 on the ODI batters list and eight places up to eighth on the allrounders list.
