Bill Gates was first in office for the chief executive of Microsoft in the year 2000.
The duties were then passed over to Steve Ballmer, who like Gates had graduated from Harvard and had been in Microsoft’s job for the long term.
Gates went on adventures into philanthropy through the charity he co-founded with then-wife Melinda, now as about 50 years after its founding will mark Microsoft turning 50 on April 4, 2025.
What started out as a small startup between two childhood friends and co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975 today is one of the world’s largest technology goliaths.
To commemorate the event, Microsoft co-founder and former chief executive Bill Gates posted a heartwarming tribute, replete with vintage pictures and personal anecdotes of the company’s rich history.
Bill Gates Microsoft is one among the top five Big Tech in the world. It turned 50 years old on April 4, 2025, and started life as a humble startup by two friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975.
it has now grown into one of the world’s biggest technology behemoths. For the momentous occasion, Microsoft co-founder and ex-CEO Bill Gates posted a touching tribute, replete with vintage pictures and personal anecdotes about the firm’s rich history.
Gates, who was the chief executive of Microsoft until the turn of the century, went to his Instagram to post a video montage showing throwback pictures from the early years of the company.
It opens with Gates sitting on a couch, selfie-style, and captioned, “Unfortunately, I’ll never feel cool again, because this was me in the early Microsoft days.
” The video then cuts to various photographs of a young Gates clad in the fashion of the times. Happy fiftieth, @Microsoft,” he called. “Thanks for the memories–and cringe-inducing photo shoots. Gates, in his own personal blog, Gates Notes, continued on what the anniversary meant.
He posted: “As much as I am looking forward to celebrating the anniversary, it really is bittersweet marking this milestone.” “I like to think back at the history of Microsoft and its future.
But it is also hard to think such an important section of my life has spanned five decades!” Another throwback came out from Gates a week before the anniversary, remembering university days at Harvard University. He posted a video of Currier House, the residence hall where he stayed as a student.
“The best experience of living in Currier House during college was.”You could eat a hamburger at every meal, play poker whenever you wanted to, and even start a mini little side project that you wound up calling Microsoft,” he told.
Born William Henry Gates III in 1955 in Seattle, Gates, began writing computer programs 13. He dropped out of Harvard in his junior year to set up Microsoft with Paul Allen.
Together with Allen, they worked on creating the operating system MS-DOS, which later became Windows and dominated the world market for office computing.
Over the years, Gates made a name for himself as a very powerful and sometimes cutthroat executive. His critics accused him of making the unfair use of Microsoft’s market domination.
This concern peaked in the late 1990s, when the United States government went after and got the record-breaking antitrust judgment against the company. In 2000, Gates stepped down as CEO, handing over the reins to long-time colleague and classmate at Harvard, Steve Ballmer.
Gates then completely transitioned to working on charitable donations through his then-wife, Melinda, with whom he established the foundation. He officially left Microsoft’s board of directors in 2020 after the firm revealed, almost immediately before, that Gates had once had an ‘intimate’ interaction with an employee, an issue previously probed by the board.
Today, Microsoft is actually the world’s fifth Big Tech company, its history not just influenced by Bill Gates and Paul Allen but also from powerful leaders such as Steve Ballmer and now-current CEO Satya Nadella. To celebrate the landmark 50 years.
Microsoft has now launched a commemorative page on its official site encompassing the entire itinerary of the company. With that, online tribute summarizes important milestone events, stages of maturation, and innovations that were experienced by Microsoft over the decades.
It also looks forward, giving a prospect of the next 50 years where it believes it should continue to transform technological innovation into an enduring and meaningful value for users.
