Player Ratings: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid (2-2 aet, 2-4 penalties) 2025 UCL Round of 16

Full match player ratings below:

Thibaut Courtois—8.5: The Belgian was huge in goal for Madrid, turning away Julian Alvarez on several occasions.

Fede Valverde—8.5: Towards the latter part of the match when all other players were exhausted, Fede seemed like he could play another 90 minutes. Did wonderfully well at both right back and center midfield.

Raul Asencio—8.5: There is no task that is too great for Asencio. The toxic environment of the Metropolitano and a deadly assault of Julian Alvarez and Griezmann did not unsettle him. Played one of the defensive moves of the season with a 30 yard sprint and slide tackle as the last man at the back to prevent Atleti from getting a clear counter down towards goal.

Toni Rudiger—7: Still appears to be carrying an injury and was a step behind in some defensive combinations. Aerial presence was important in clearing crosses and winning headers. Came big again with the game-winning penalty in the shootout.

Ferland Mendy—6: Successfully defended against big periods of the match for Atleti. Slipped while on the ball which almost caused an Atleti goal and was caught in possession more than once.

Tchouameni—6.5: Played impressively in the midfield but his match was affected once he had collected a yellow card.

Luka Modric—7: Running the game for 65 minutes looking for a way past a determined Atleti defense.

Jude Bellingham—8.5: Truly came into life in the second half of the game operating just behind Mbappe. Grunted his way back defensively and frightened the Atletico defense every time he could turn and run at their rear line. Provided the small bit of class to Madrid’s game in the final third, retaining possession in confined spaces just short of the Atleti box.

Rodrygo—6.5: Not as good as he was in the first leg but provided Madrid with much needed width on the right side. As ever, worked incredibly hard off the ball to support the team.

Vinicius Junior—5.5: Not great on the night frequently finding himself with several defenders in his face. Marcos Llorente was able to match the Brazilian purely through physicality. Fluffed the penalty that would have put Madrid ahead late in the second half.

Kylian Mbappe—6: Never really certain which Kylian Mbappe you’re going to see in a Madrid jersey: the one who scored a hat trick away at City or the petulant figure that he was tonight. Had one moment of class running at the Atleti defense with time and space, earning a penalty.

Substitutions:

Eduardo Camavinga—9: Man of the match even though he played 55 minutes on the bench. Altered Madrid’s game and re-named the momentum in Madrid’s direction. Camavinga’s best game of the season.

Brahim Diaz—7: His movement was hard for the Atletico backline to keep up with. Attracted a number of fouls in threatening areas.

Lucas Vazquez—7: Shifted Valverde into midfield and brought fresh legs without dropping off.

Fran Garcia—6: Replaced Ferland Mendy following the Frenchman’s muscle injury and did his job well.

Endrick—N/A: Late substitute for Vinicius Junior.
